An elevated cottage with sea-green trim, a metal roof, large front windows, and a covered porch, surrounded by lush trees and greenery

Beach Cottage sits one house from the Gulf on Anna Maria Island. Designed by Don Cooper of Cooper Johnson Smith Peterson Architects, it borrows from the island’s old cottages: a hipped metal roof with a cupola, sea-green shutters and railings, and a wraparound porch floored in patterned tile. The living level is raised over a white masonry base with arched openings, and a curving stair climbs to the front porch.

The interior detailing is what earned the house its award. The kitchen is wrapped in windows, with white cabinetry, dark stone counters, a farmhouse sink and a bridge faucet. The breakfast bay and dining room carry the same paneled walls and tall divided-light windows, a bedroom is tucked under a board-lined vaulted ceiling, and a paneled elevator connects the floors.

At ground level, the pool sits under the house behind a row of arches, shaded through the day and open to the garden.

Recognition: 2019 Grand Aurora Award, Best Interior Detailing.
